Plus we get an insight into why Gandalf chooses Bilbo to accompany Thorin Oakenshield on their dangerous adventure.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a 2012 fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is the first of a three-part film adaptation of the 1937 novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, to be followed by The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Set sixty years before The Lord of the Rings, the story is about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is hired by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to accompany thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on a quest across Middle-earth to reclaim theLonelyMountainfrom Smaug the dragon. The film premiered in New Zealand on 28 November 2012 and is scheduled for general release on 14 December 2012 at over 4,000 cinemas.

The Plot.

Bilbo Baggins, a curious young Hobbit is invited to journey with the wizard Gandalf and a group of Dwarves with the goal of reclaiming stolen treasure taken from their kin at the Lonely Mountain by the dragon Smaug.

The journey leads them from Bilbo’s home in the Shire through the Elven stronghold of Rivendell and through the Goblin infested Misty Mountains where Bilbo meets a creature with an object of mysterious qualities that will change his life, and the life of his family, forever. As they continue, they discover that other vile creatures also seek to destroy them.

Before filming began on 21 March 2011, the principal actors trained in sword fighting, riding and boating for a month. Jackson hoped such activities would allow the cast to bond so chemistry would be evident on screen as well as getting them used to life in Wellington.

The film stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo, with an appearance from Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood as Frodo. Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Cate Blanchett, Richard Armitage and Sir Ian McKellen also star in the 3D release.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for release on 14 December.
